Fortunately, there are simple steps that you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery at your own expense. First, locate a clear work surface to perform the process. Lay out all the tools needed. Find the battery hatch, and ensure it is set to "open." Make use of a flathead screwdriver, coin or another similar tool to open the hatch to open. Then, carefully pull out the battery by lifting the side closest to the hook for the key-ring. Use rubber gloves to shield the electronic contact surfaces.

Place the new battery in the socket after the previous one was removed. Ensure that the positive side of the battery is facing up, and that all clips are in place. Slide the cover toward the key-ring until it becomes loose and falls off. Then, remove the cover and reveal the mechanical key blade, which is hidden inside. You can use it to unlock your car from the driver's doors when you've lost or broken the key fob.

Replace the battery and snap back the fob.

Note: Some older Volvos use a different type of battery, the CR2025. CR2025 batteries are 7 tenths of a millimeter thinner than a CR2032 battery, which means you'll need to be extra careful when placing the battery of your replacement volvo v40 key.
