For instance an item with a rating of +2 will require two regular Smithing Stones to upgrade while the +3 model requires four. The number of stones required to upgrade a weapon will increase until it requires more Smithing Stones. At that point it will reset to one.

The upgrade of weapons can also change their base stats. While this is generally beneficial however, it could have negative consequences too. Upgrades can render items inaccessible, unless you're exceptionally lucky.

Armor items can be upgraded to improve their effectiveness. This will increase the defense base of a chest or helm while belts and gloves can boost their strength and agility. Armor also offers an option to reroll its Enhanced Defense percentage, which means that it may change its roll to a lower value.

The upgrade template of a weapon will display the new stats that it will gain upon upgrading, along with the relative value of those stats. This means that the weapon will gain an attack damage of 3% if it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. The 3% difference does not mean that the weapon will hit three times less, since it is an absolute number.

Armor

Making a few improvements to your armor could make a a huge difference in your ability to endure. Certain sets can offer MASSIVE boosts to poison, curse, fire and magic resistance, making traversing tough areas a breeze. In general, the greater defense you have on your character, the more health you can get from each point. Therefore, it's a good idea to upgrade your armor.

You can upgrade your armor by visiting one of the Great Fairy Fountains. There are four Great Fairy Fountains in the game and to unlock each one you must complete a side quest that involves the Stable Trotters. After you've completed the main side quest and completed the fountain that corresponds you'll be able to contact any Great Fairy to open up the armor upgrading menu.

The amount of material needed to upgrade each piece of armor is different. It is possible to use anything from three Red Chuchu jellies and 10 Rupees to upgrade the first armor piece, and between five Rubies or ten Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns to upgrade each subsequent one. For instance the Champion Leathers can be upgraded to +5 defense, which allows you to keep up with a large group of enemies in most cold conditions, and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded all the way to +20 defense, granting the protection needed to survive the full-on assault with a few friends.

It isn't possible to upgrade armor in the same way as weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior then you should concentrate on upgrading your armor for physical power or spell power. It's also worthwhile to save your armor upgrades for armor you'll still be wearing at the end of the game, like the Ring of Lightning and Spectral Shield, or the helmet you wear for the final boss fight and the Monter Parts Merchant's mask.

You can also unlock some perks for your armor by giving the jeweler in Gerudo Town 10 Twinkling Titanite. You'll generally want to save these upgrades for the weapon you'll use to beat the game. For instance the Longsword or Battleaxe. But it's useful to have some upgrades to the armor on your chest and helmets to allow you to sneak around some monsters.

Potions

Potions are liquid substances that, when consumed, give the user a temporary status effect. There are five kinds of potions that have different effects and durations. In addition to armor, weapons, and potions, players are able to upgrade their trinkets. Upgrades can be obtained by paying the appropriate currency to an upgrade vendor. Trinkets, unlike other items which can be upgraded can be traded at will without losing statistics.

The upgrade vendors can be found in major cities and the capital of each zone, and in some instances in dungeons. Upgrades for trinkets are offered with gold, tokens or fragments of trinkets that are rare.

Upgrading a trinket is an economical alternative to buying new ones. A player can upgrade a trinket for as little as 12 tokens. The new trinket will have the same base ilvl as the previous one, and will include an additional 1% upgrade bonus.

Trinkets can be upgraded once the old ones are not needed and allows players to increase their power and value over time. They can be traded among players, making them an alternative to gold.

Players should upgrade their most essential items first. This means that the most-important slot items for each class are upgraded first before their secondary gear and finally other equipment that they will not replace in the near future (such as an earring or a cloak). Players should also take into consideration their class's preferred stats when choosing the items to upgrade. If Haste and Crit are two of the most important stats to tank players then they should consider upgrading their chest, helm and shoulders.
