If you own a Toyota equipped with smart key technology you might be able to open the doors and start the engine without taking your keys out of your pocket or purse. Take a photograph of the battery that was used and note the place where the new one is in the case so you can assemble it properly when you're done. The process is fairly straightforward, and you can find replacement batteries at any hardware store or big-box stores. You can also purchase batteries on the internet. A new battery isn't just cheap, but can also restore the correct function of your key fob.

The first step is to take the key metal from the fob. There's usually a small metal button that is located just above the key part of the fob. Press this button to release the key. Then, you need to disassemble the fob. This can be done by pressing the small notch on the fob which appears to be a keyhole or by inserting the flat tool into the small hole. Once you have the fob split into two pieces, a front and a back, sliding tools into the notch or small opening can allow you to access the battery compartment.

Examine the battery. It is likely to be silver-colored and shaped in a circle. It should have a label on it that is a reference to the kind of battery you require to replace it with.
